The fth Text REtrieval Conference TREC was held at the National Institute of Standards and Tech nology NIST on November The con ference was co sponsored by NIST and the Informa tion Technology O ce of the Defense Advanced Re search Projects Agency DARPA as part of the TIP STER Text Program TREC is the latest in a series of workshops de signed to foster research in text retrieval For anal yses of the results of previous workshops see Sparck Jones Tague Sutcli e and Blustein and Har man In addition the overview paper in each of the previous TREC proceedings summarizes the re sults of that TREC The TREC workshop series has the following goals
